Research previously conducted by IAM RoadSmart revealed that a surprisingly high number of UK drivers don’t know the facts and figures for what the legal limit is for alcohol content when behind the wheel.
In a 2022 survey of just over 1,000 motorists, when asked what the legal alcohol limit is in England and Wales, 77% said they didn’t know or answered incorrectly, and 83% said they didn’t know or answered incorrectly when given the same questions for Scotland.
Furthermore, RED Driving School surveyed 1,000 people** from a younger demographic, aged between 17 and 24, which highlighted concerning gaps in education and driver awareness of the drink-driving issue. The findings revealed that 79% of people did not know the drink-drive limit, and one in five young people would not plan to drink and drive, but admit that the unexpected does happen.
In June 2024, IAM RoadSmart joined the British Medical Association (BMA) and other organisations to call for a reduction in the alcohol limit for all drivers, with even stricter limits being proposed for commercial drivers. Click here to read more on this.
