Brake’s recent survey finds 52% of drivers are unaware of the rules for using smart motorways, but what more can be done to protect drivers?
Working in partnership with Green Flag, Brake spoke to over 2,000 drivers in July to get a better understanding of driver behaviours and knowledge around motorway driving. While motorways remain some of the safest roads in the UK, the increase in traffic levels over the past decade, coupled with the introduction of smart motorways, means that the vital insights presented in this report help to paint a better picture of the training and legislation needed to maintain this safety record.
Interim CEO Tony Greenidge said ‘As a fellow UK road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart is delighted to support the findings of this important new report and have long campaigned for safer motorways for all. However, some results leave cause for concern and show that further education may be needed, especially as new smart motorways continue to be rolled out across the country.’
